SETTING:
The reader is given a pretty exact address for the setting because, in the story, myriads of people know the address of the house, be it for reasons good or bad. While Baby Suggs was alive, the house was a hub and a central stop for many runaway slaves in Ohio; whether they were passing through, waiting for someone, or staying and needed a temporary home, the doors of 124 were open. When Sethe killed her baby, the house became more of an omen or a forbidden place. The setting stays the same throughout, at 124 and the surrounding areas of the town. This supports the rest of the story since the characters, like the plot-line and setting, are reluctant to leave the only constant thing they have known since their freedom from slavery. The events of the story revolve around a particular event that occurred here, so it is only fitting to have the whole story take place at and around 124. THEMES:
